GENERAL
COURSE GUIDELINES
OBJECTIVES:
The objective of James Tan's correspondence courses is to raise the
general understanding and standards of Chinese brush painting and to
promote and further develop Chinese culture.
COVERAGE:
Classes will be conducted by mail and email in a step-by-step tutorial
fashion designed to increase students? skill and interest in the art of
Chinese brush painting. Major topics include:
1. Both
traditional and Lingnan schools of Chinese brush painting techniques.
2. Fundamental theories underlying Chinese brush painting to include
proper use of brush, proper use of ink and color, and the techniques of
copying and imitating and composition.
3. Subjects: flowers, birds, animals, landscapes, vegetables, insects
and fish.
CLASSES:
Classes will be conducted by correspondence, using Chinese painting
samples provided by the instructor. Students will enroll in an initial
3-month period of instruction, and, if so desired, may extend in monthly
increments thereafter, giving 30 days notice to insure continuity.
PROCEDURES: Upon receipt of registration and payment, the instructor will
forward the student homework for the first 2 months: 2 sets of 6 sample
paintings each (3 small and 3 medium) to the student. At the end of the
first month, the student will return the first 6 paintings, together with
[1] the work the student has done and [2] questions for the instructor.
Upon receipt, the instructor will [1] correct the student work, [2]
address the student questions and [3] forward the next set of 6
paintings. If the student elects to continue beyond the initial 3 month
period, the student will notify the instructor by the end of the second
month and (upon receipt of payment) an additional 6 sample paintings will
be provided. This procedure will continue as long as the student is
enrolled. If the student decides to terminate, all sample paintings will
be returned to the instructor.

TUITION AND
LENDING OF
PAINTING SAMPLES
TUITION:
US$480 for the first three months of enrollment and US$160 for each month
thereafter, payable by check or money order or by a Pay Pal account.
EQUIPMENT
AND SUPPLIES: Students must provide their own painting equipment and
supplies. Upon request, the instructor will provide a list of needed
supplies and a list of suppliers.
LENDING OF
INSTRUCTOR CHINESE PAINTING SAMPLES:
The
instructor Chinese painting samples will be sent to the student in a
cardboard mailing tube provided by the instructor.
To
minimize the possibility of damage, the samples must not be removed from
the sealed plastic envelopes UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
The
student shall use the mailing tube to return the sample paintings and
the homework. Questions for the instructor may be included with the
homework or sent via email.
Samples
will be sent by registered mail at the instructor expense and returned
to the instructor by registered mail at the student expense.
ALL
PAINTING SAMPLES REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF THE INSTRUCTOR AND MAY BE
CIRCULATED ONLY AMONG CURRENT STUDENTS WITH THE SPECIFIC PERMISSION OF
THE INSTRUCTOR.
NOTE:
Borrowers of painting samples are responsible for keeping them CLEAN and
FREE OF DAMAGES. In case of any loss and/or damages to the sample's),
borrower shall compensate the instructor appropriately.
